Frequently Asked Questions

(click question to reveal and hide answer)

What should acid free matting be used on?

Acid free mats should be used on any original artwork, such as watercolor, and pastel, limited edition prints, all photos, any antique print, needleworks, and any paper items you wish to preserve.

What is museum glass?

Museum glass will block up to 97% of the UV rays. That greatly reduces fading caused by light.

Why should clothing items be put in a shadow box?

Clothing items, such as sports jerseys, uniforms, wedding and baby dresses, and all antique clothing should be in a shadow box with acid free cloth and glass front (preferably museum glass). Clothing should not be allowed to touch glass or frame. This type of framing will keep items safe for many years to come.

What is best way to stretch needle works?

Needlework should be stretched on an acid free needlework board with non-rusting galvanized staples. Sticky board can ruin your needlework. Cardboard is full of acid and can burn it. Lacing needlework is time consuming and tends to loosen over time and needs to be re-done.

Why would glass be used on matted items?

Mats are made of layers of paper. If any moisture gets to the mat it can cause separation in the layers. Glass is less expensive than re-matting the picture.
